And thus, with mixed feelings, terminates my year-and-half of small town B.C. reporting experience for the Vanderhoof Omineca Express.
It sounds like in the middle of nowhere, but Mr. Vanderhoof first founded the community as a writer’s retreat and indeed, it’s a underrated area full of pretty and interesting (news-wise, Canadian issues-y) spots — who knew!
So for the one-person newsroom, 5,000-circulation, weekly newspaper, I covered community events, local heroes, art/theatre/music, district council, sports, police report, and relevant supreme court judgments.
Also contributed local business profiles and industry updates to the monthly northern B.C. industry magazine Need2Know.
Anything and everything really, including my childhood dream: archaeological finds!
